Outside one of southwest England’s busiest shopping malls, I came across a lengthy strip of lavender planted on the edge of a public car park. There were perhaps two hundred or more bumblebees foraging along the entire strip, with buff-tailed, white-tailed, common carder and early bumblebee workers well represented.

When I returned later in the week, I noticed that many of the bees’ wings were badly worn, producing a distinctly muted, ‘mellow’ buzz: a physical condition this recording attempts to convey.

Observed species: B. terrestris; B. lucorum; B. pascuorum; B. pratorum
