about

Although skylarks are best known for their lengthy song flight, they will occasionally sing whilst perched on rocks, fence posts and other structures.

Advancing very slowly across open grassland towards a skylark perched on a granite boulder, I was able to capture this fascinating, intermittent song variant at a distance of about fifteen metres. The familiar, airborne song variant is audible in the background from several other males.

Species: Alauda arvensis

Recorded June 3, 2018 at 05:39. Dartmoor National Park, Devon. Sennheiser MKH 8020 with Telinga parabolic reflector to Zoom F8.
