about

I was looking southwest through a reedbed, across the unusually still surface of the River Severn.

When it started, the reed warbler's song reverberated across the water with remarkable depth and clarity. The bird’s oystercatcher mimicry—audible towards the end of the recording—was so convincing that I remember looking skywards to see if that species was passing overhead.

Species: Acrocephalus scirpaceus

Recorded May 12, 2019 at 05:03. Fretherne, Gloucestershire. Sennheiser MKH 8020 with Telinga parabolic reflector to Zoom F8.
