about

An early bumblebee queen, foraging through a bed of creeping comfrey.

Rather than entering from the front portion of each flower (thereby assisting with pollination), this queen was actively nectar robbing: biting small holes into the underside of the floral tissue with her mandibles, then extracting nectar through the perforations.

These delicate bites are audible, with careful listening.

Species: B. pratorum

April 15, 2018 at 09:39. Painswick, Gloucestershire. Cloudy; light-to-moderate winds.
