about

Solitary bees are often encountered alongside bumblebees, and a number of species are also capable of buzz pollination.

During this process, a bee vibrates its thoracic flight muscles at high frequencies—much higher than for normal flight—when positioned inside or on a flower. The generated vibrations are then focused through the mandibles and legs onto the structure of the flower’s anthers, which vibrate sympathetically and release tightly packed pollen.

Although I witnessed and recorded this behaviour many times in bumblebees, this hairy-footed flower bee provided one of the best examples of the process as she foraged through a dense patch of creeping comfrey.

Species: A. plumipes
