about

During a recording trip to Poland in May 2016, I spent some time in an upper storey apartment bedroom which featured an outwards-opening, Velux roof window.

One morning—with the window wide open for fresh air—I was awoken by the unusual, ‘crackle-whistle’ song of a black redstart. Later in the day and in preparation for a recording attempt the following morning, I mounted two microphones directly onto roof tiles just outside the window; I then trailed both cables into my room, connected them to a handheld recorder next to my bed, and left everything running overnight.

This recording of a male black redstart advancing along the apartment rooftop after 5am is the fruit of my efforts. The scene is framed by various dawn chorus species, and the morning activity of a foreman in a construction site opposite. For me, these background sounds effectively and subtly contextualise the species’ favoured suburban/urban habitat.

Species: Phoenicurus ochruros

Recorded May 7, 2016 at 05:03. Northern Poland. DPA 4060 matched AB pair (boundary mounted) to Zoom H4n.
